EmployAbility Clare supports people with a disability or mental health difficulty access and maintain employment, while providing effective solutions to employers’ staffing needs.

 


Surviving and Thriving through the Recession

 

EmployAbility Clare is working hard to ensure people with a disability continue to access employment through these challenging economic times. “The good news is that our placement numbers for 2012, greatly exceeded those of 2011”, commented Pat O’Neill, Team Leader with EmployAbility Clare. He urges employers to contact the service when recruiting. “Our strength is the job match – it's about having the appropriate knowledge about both the candidate and the position to match the right person to the right job”.

Commitment to Quality:

The Clare Supported Employment team believes the best route to increased employment opportunity for candidates who have a disability or who experience mental health difficulties, is to ensure the highest quality of service is provided to both employment candidates and employers. The organisation has been engaged with Excellence Ireland Quality Association (EIQA) since 2006 and during this time, has been strategically focused on maximizing the quality of the service it provides. In December 2008, Clare Supported Employment were delighted to be the first FAS funded, Supported Employment Service in Ireland to be awarded the Q-Mark, quality assurance award, by EIQA.

 

The Q Mark Assessor viewed the organisation as ‘making significant progress’ in relation to quality management and commented on the ‘strong ethos of planning and development within the service’. “The quest for quality is never ending”, commented Alice O’Carroll, Team Leader with the service, “we are currently working to implement recommendations made by EIQA, to further enhance the service we provide”.

 

 

Continuous Development through consultation

 

Each year we seek feedback from the job seekers who use our service. In addition to this, in 2008, we surveyed a wide range of providers of services to both people with disabilities and the community in general. We asked for feedback on the service we provide to people with a disability and any specific issues, requests or ideas for improvements people may have. The following were the main findings:

 

Ø  99.9% of those surveyed felt the service could be of benefit to some users of their own services.

Ø  72% thought the users of their services were well aware of/very well aware of our service.

Ø  50% of respondents said they knew the service well or very well.

Ø  50% rated the service we provide to people with a disability as very good and 33% rated it as excellent.

 

In addition, some organisations requested a presentation on CSES, comments indicated that people are very pleased that the criteria has changed to allow us to place people for 8 hours of work per week or more (down from 18 hours), people welcomed the virtual elimination of the waiting list and one organisation welcomed the addition of an Employment Facilitator with Irish Sign Language.


Where from here?

Presentations are being organised as requested. Specific organisations made comments or requests in relation to their particular situations. We are following up with each organisation to address specific issues they raised or to provide clarifications. We note that we need to undertake further work to ensure that all  those who provide services to people with disability in the county are very familiar with our organisation so that they, in turn, can provide information on the service to job seekers with disabilities, who will then be in a position to make an informed choice as to whether the service might of benefit to them. We will address this by stepping up our efforts to promote the service in the region, by meeting with service providers, publishing articles in the local press, and holding radio interviews, advertising where financially viable, holding open information days, distribution of advertising information, meeting with potential new referral sources (GP groups, Primary Care Teams, health care professionals, families and service providers staff, education and training providers, CE Schemes and other community groups), submitting articles for disability and community sector newsletters and publications, having a presence at community events etc.

 

Finally, we note that 50% rated the service provided to people with a disability as very good and 33% rated it as excellent. As an employment service, we interpret this data in terms of employment attained. The good news is that our placement numbers for 2009 so far have marginally exceeded our placement numbers for this time last year. We view this is an excellent achievement at a time when our national unemployment rate is just short of 12%. However, our aspiration is that each job seeker who engages with the service is supported to secure and maintain the best quality employment outcome possible and as such we strive to place each individual who engages with the job seeking process.
