The first farmers in the Coolnatullagh valley in the eastern Burren settled in three farms c. 2000 BC. They constructed a single wedge tomb, numerous burial cairns, two fulachta fiadh and a number of small circular houses as well as an extensive system of field boundaries. Olive Carey will present the findings of a two year research project outlining what the archaeology tells us of the farming practices, belief systems and social structures of this Beaker Period/Early Bronze Age Burren community.
This is the fifth installment in a joint lecture series by Clare Archaeological and Historical Society and Shannon Archaeological and Historical Society, which takes place second Tuesday of each month from October 2009 to March 2010 at 8.30pm in the Westropp Room of Clare Museum, Arthur's Row, Ennis.
Free to members of either society, non-members 5 euro.
