Letters and Diaries of the Harvard-Irish Survey in Clare, 1930-1936

with Dr Anne Byrne

This illustrated talk examines a selection of the professional and private letters of the social anthropology strand of the Harvard-Irish Survey (1930-1936). These letters contribute to the historiography of the first visit to Europe in the 1930s of an American  team of anthropologists and archaeologists engaged in a multi-disciplinary study of a ‘modern’ society. How letters are deployed, who writes to whom, what is relayed, requested or refused reveals the deployment of a novel research strategy by anthropologists Arensberg and Kimball. Letters to and from research informants reveal not only the anthropologists’ requests but informant voices, perspectives and practices – material that informs ethnographic observations on town and country life in Clare. What can we learn about the historical, political and social contexts of the recent past from letters?  What can we know from  letters as  'documents of life'?

Anne is a sociologist with the School of Political Science and Sociology, NUI Galway and a member of the Gender Research Cluster. Her teaching and research interests span gender, identity, rurality, inequality, stigma, group work and community development, anthropological historiography and qualitative research methodologies with a particular interest in narrative inquiry and collaborative research practices. She is a founding member of the NUIG Narrative Studies Group established to engage in multidisciplinary studies of oral, visual and textual narratives.

This talk is open to everyone.  It is free for Burrenbeo Trust members and is a €5 minimum donation for non-members.  For more information please email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or phone 091 638096.
